What To Expect This Year in Huntsville, Alabama

While the year of 2020 came with a lot of highs and mostly lows, 2021 is looking brighter everyday. COVID-19 restrictions are beginning to be lifted, and the community is excited to get back to their semi-normal lives doing the things they enjoy with people they love. So as a citizen of Huntsville, what can you expect for the rest of 2021 and early 2022?

 It’s no secret that Huntsville saw a record amount of growth last year. Several companies invested in development projects to bring new jobs and more than $1 billion in capital investments. Some of these companies are well established members of the community, and others were brand new such as the new Facebook Data Center and Mazda Toyota plant.

 Huntsville is now named the fastest growing city in the state of Alabama, and is on track to take Birmingham’s place as the largest city. With the population rising, as well as new well-known names making their stake in Huntsville, here’s what you can expect to see.

More Growth

With the rate at which Huntsville is growing, you can expect to see continued growth not only in Huntsville, but also surrounding areas such as Athens, Decatur, Madison and Harvest. Since 2010, the population has grown by 10% and in 2019 it was recorded that almost 200,000 residents call the Huntsville metropolitan area home. With more and more job opportunities and expansions, you can expect to see that number continue to grow.

New Businesses

Facebook’s Huntsville Data Center was first announced in 2018, and was met with much excitement. Since the finished project, they have announced an additional expansion resulting in their early success. Right now, the data center is a two-building structure but building three and four are in the works. Nippon Express, a logistics company, is expected to locate on the Mazda Toyota campus also within the next year, investing $19.1 million and bringing over 100 new jobs.

There have been several new developments when it comes to hotels, eateries, breweries and entertainment venues. A few include the new Rocket City Trash Pandas Toyota Stadium, Stovehouse (opening more restaurants in late 2021), Margaritaville Resort (anticipated 2021-2022), as well as an Amphitheater coming to Huntsville’s Midcity District. 

Midcity is expected to add Huntsville’s Amphitheater, Trader Joe’s and a pottery studio, Color Me Mine. The new Margaritaville Resort will be located near the new Toyota Stadium, and will bring 150 hotel rooms, 3,000 square feet of meeting space, a lazy river and a water park!

Community Events

Now that we are able to get out and about more, residents are gearing up to attend some of the community’s most popular, as well as new annual events. Whether you enjoy farmers markets, music festivals, arts and crafts festivals, or cocktail parties, there are plenty of events happening this summer, and the fall in Huntsville, Alabama. The Camp at Midcity hosts their farmers market every Sunday from 1-5pm. Other farmers markets include Oakwood’s Market, Greene Street Market at Nativity, The Providence Market and Lowe Mill’s Outdoor Market.
